Can you actually design in ChatGPT with Canva?

I've been testing this a lot lately, and I have thoughts.

A lot of people see "Canva is now in ChatGPT" and think you can fully design inside ChatGPT. Spoiler: you can't. Not really. But.. There are a few genuinely useful ways to use it, and this week I'm breaking down exactly what works (and what doesn't).

Here are 3 ways I actually use it. 👇

First Things First: How to Connect Canva Inside ChatGPT:

  • Open ChatGPT

  • Click the "GPTs" button in your left menu

  • Search for Canva

  • Click Connect and log in with your Canva account

Done: Canva is now available inside all your ChatGPT chats.

Here’s How I Use It:

(STEP 1) Start with a brainstorm
Before I touch any design, I use ChatGPT the way it was meant to be used, as a thinking partner. Let's say I have an Easter sale coming up. I'll open a chat and ask ChatGPT to help me map out the whole launch: how to warm up my audience, what offer makes sense, what to post and when. A full brainstorm, right there in the chat.

(STEP 2) Ask Canva to make you a design
This is where it gets fun. Once I know what I'm making, I ask Canva inside ChatGPT to create a design for me. You can request basically anything, an Instagram post, a flyer, an invitation, a presentation slide.

The key is to be specific with your prompt. Tell it:

  • The type of design ("Easter brunch flyer")

  • The text you need ("Easter Brunch — April 6th, 10am–1pm, Amsterdam")

  • Colors, style, and any elements (bunnies, pastel tones, Easter eggs, get creative)

The more detail you give it, the better the result. You'll get a few options to choose from:

(STEP 3) Pick your favorite and open it in Canva
Select the one you like most, then click "Open in Canva" to make any edits, swap fonts, adjust colors, or add your own finishing touches.

(GOOD TO KNOW)
At the moment you can't edit anything directly inside ChatGPT. It's design inspo with a shortcut to Canva, not a full design tool. So you can’t ask Canva to add an Easter bunny to the design.

But honestly? For a quick starting point, it can still work!

Will it replace designing in Canva? Not even close. But as a brainstorm-to-design shortcut? Worth knowing about.
